When it comes to tying your hair, there’s nothing that does the job better than a scrunchie. They don’t pull on or damage your hair, and look super cute. But fabric scrunchies can get grimey over time, and you might be tempted to just throw them into the washing machine.
Like other pieces of clothing, fabric scrunchies also get dirty over time. The good news is that scrunchies are washable. But if you want to get the dirt and oils off your scrunchie without ruining it, you should handwash it gently.
When Should I Wash My Scrunchies?
A scrunchie is essentially elastic wrapped in fabric. Like all other fabrics, scrunchies can also get dirty over time.
Scrunchies are great to sleep in – they allow your hair to hold the style for longer and prevent them from breaking while you toss and turn in bed. But a scrunchie that you sleep in often may get dirty from sweat, oil and product build up. This is why dermatologists recommend washing your scrunchies.
How often you wash your scrunchies depends on how often you wear them. The scrunchie you wear to bed every night needs to be washed way more than a scrunchie you only wear out occasionally.
Scrunchies need to be washed because oil, hair products and dirt can accumulate on their surface. A satin scrunchie will begin to look dirty as these substances accumulate on it.
How To Wash Scrunchies
Some scrunchies are made from fabrics that can be machine washed, such as corduroy or velour. Others, such as silk or satin would be completely ruined in a machine. As a general rule, it is a good idea to hand wash your scrunchies since hand washing is gentler than machine washing, meaning your scrunchies last longer.
To clean your scrunchie fill up a bowl with warm water and a small amount of fabric softener. Soak your scrunchie in the bowl and use your hands to gently rinse the scrunchie. Then squeeze out the excess water and leave the scrunchie to air dry. You can also use a hand-washing liquid detergent to clean scrunchies using the same procedure.
Another easy way to get squeaky clean scrunchies is to wash them with shampoo. Put the scrunchie on your palm, add a pea-sized amount of shampoo and gently work it into the scrunchie. Then rinse off the shampoo. If shampoo can remove dirt and build up from your hair, there’s no reason why it can’t do the same for your scrunchie.
If you haven’t already moved to the scrunchie life, now is the perfect time to do so. And if you’re wearing your scrunchies out and about, in the gym or to sleep in, now is the perfect time to wash them.
