If you aren’t familiar with the fashion world of Haute Couture, it may seem backward that only some can purchase the high-end products they produce. The name itself remains a bit hush-hush, as it’s taboo to talk about. If things are on the down-low, then who can buy Haute Couture?
Essentially, not just anyone can buy Haute Couture. Purchasing a Haute Couture dress requires an in-person fitting at their Paris location as each dress is specifically made for each buyer. You must have an insider’s relationship in order to even get a fitting.
What makes Haute Couture so special anyway?
History of Haute Couture
Tracing back to the time of Louis XVI, Haute Couture was originally invented as “high-end sewing.” As the fashion world began to change and evolve in the 20th century, Haute Couture dresses became a means for designers to advertise their craft. The word couture itself even became interchangeable with handmade garments of the finest materials.
Nowadays, we see celebrities sporting Haute Couture on red carpets, rather than dresses being sold to make big bucks. It’s rather a marketing tactic for the company to sell perfumes and lipsticks to the general public.
How to Purchase
Unless you’re looking to spend a fortune on a personalized gown and a few trips to a seamstress in Paris, it’s going to be rather difficult to get your hands on a Haute Couture gown.
Most of the Haute Couture clients these days come from countries like China and Russia. Chanel President, Bruno Pavlosky, told Women’s Wear Daily that it’s possible there are no more than 4,000 clients around the world. With so few clients, it’s a wonder how they survive. Although each dress is worth an absolute fortune. The handmade detail and stitching put forth into each design truly speaks for itself. It’s no wonder they have survived so many years off of the same luxury business model.
The world of Haute Couture is rather closed off. Designers aren’t willing to give the names of those purchasing their dresses, as it’s frowned upon to speak of.
It’s unlikely that just anyone can purchase a Haute Couture dress, even if they have the proper funding for it. The community surrounding the company is so hush-hush about their sellers and pricing. Because of the nature of each dress being geared toward one particular customer, it makes sense that that kind of information isn’t available online.
While you might not be able to order one of their hand made gowns online, you still have the option to purchase accessories and makeup products. As for now, your best bet to finding a Haute Couture gown would be to buy one secondhand.
Otherwise, you’ll need to visit Paris, get fitted for your clothing around six times, and pay a pretty penny for the product. The process can take up to several months, so the long process racks up a higher price tag. Although, when the best of the best are making something custom fit for you, it’s no wonder things are so expensive.
