The joys of unboxing a new lipstick, to see a sharply defined lipstick cut perfectly, are unbeatable. However, what is not so joyful, is finding out that your favourite lipstick contains animal derived products. So, the question on all of our lips: is lipstick vegan?
Some lipsticks are vegan, whereas others may not be. It completely depends on the product and brand. Some brands are renowned for not being vegan-friendly, whereas others make a conscious effort to keep their products vegan.
Ingredients in Lipstick
Lipsticks have always been a game-changer when it comes to spicing up your look. They have ingredients lists which have evolved over history, but currently their main ingredients involve waxes, oils and emollients. Although times are changing, some products still use ingredients such as crushed ladybirds to achieve their colour.
If you’re looking for a reliable vegan lipstick, Urban decay have several products which are vegan and cruelty-free, such as their Vice Lipstick. NARS does have some vegan products, however they are not cruelty-free. Unfortunately, they have changed their terms to test on animals in China as it is required by law.
Some more suggestions of brands with vegan lipsticks that are available are:
- Too Faced are both vegan and cruelty-free, as when asked if they tested on animals their response was: “No way, Too Faced loves animals! Our products are totally cruelty free”.
- NYX have a vegan section on their website, listing their Butter Lipstick as having a vegan formula and being cruelty-free.
- e.l.f is known to be a vegan and cruelty-free brand. Not only that, they are also paraben–free, looking after both you and the animals!
So, whether you’re looking for a gloss, a matte lip or a subtle nude, be sure to check out the specific product and make sure that it is certified vegan (and cruelty-free). There are thousands of lip products on the market, so you can afford to be picky!
