Versace; the famous last name of Gianni and Donatella Versace, two of the most famous fashion designers throughout history. The luxury fashion house has maintained the title name and become an epitome of haute couture, taking inspiration from Greek and Roman ruins, and established itself as one the high end fashion brand leaders of the world.
Versace is an Italian luxury fashion house that was founded by Gianni Versace in 1978 in Milan, Italy. Gianni reamined creative director of the brand until he was murdered in 1997. His sister Donatella took over as artistic director of the company, and currently is still in this position.
Versace is considered an icon of Italian high end fashion, and can be easily recognized by many symbols. The head of Medusa is one of the most identifiable symbols of the brand, as well as the black and yellow Baroque print that has become characteristic.
Gianni and Donatella Versace grew up in Reggio Calabria, Italy which is host to many of the inspirations that makeup the brand today. The architectural and historical structures of the area all reference Ancient Greece. The first Versace store opened in Milan in 1978, but quickly became popular and successful. The unique color palette, prints, and sensual cutouts of the garments made for an extremely particular collection that attracted a wave of customers.
The brand expanded over the years and established other lines such as jewelry, houseware, haute couture with Atelier Versace, and others. The brand was credited for combining sexuality with the classic approach of dressing, resulting in a truly distinctive style that was never before seen.
Throughout his career Gianni Versace dressed the likes of Elton John, Michael Jackson, Paul McCartney, and others. Gianni is often credited as the designer who helped discover some of the most iconic 1990’s supermodels such as Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, and Christy Turlington.
The brand still continues to grow and expand today, and is currently owned by Capri Holdings. The company is headquartered in Milan and releases multiple collections each year. The company is not only of Italian origin, but is said to truly represent the history of Italy through its tributes to Greek and Roman culture, which are dispersed throughout the country.
Presence in Italy
Versace takes great pride in being an Italian heritage brand, and is categorized as a ‘Nowstalgia’ brand. For inspiration, the brand looks back at the past ‘golden days’ when Gianni was still creative director. The brand is also known for turning towards Italian history for inspiration in every sense. It is clear that Italy plays a very big role within the brand.

Versace is an Italian native brand that has grown into a massive fashion empire taking over the world with designs that combine class with sultriness.
While Gianni is no longer present, his family has ensured the brand still remains as it was intended to be; a representation of Italian heritage, tradition, and the iconic fashion style that has made the country one of the biggest fashion centers of the world.
Like many other brands, Versace has been modernized and now sells sneakers, jeans, and t-shirts. However, each and every Versace product represents Italy in one way or another and further develops the mission that Gianni had in mind when he first established the brand.
